Obituary

Billy N. Baxter, age 85, of Calhoun, died Friday morning, August 13th, 2021, after an extended period of declining health. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kay Greeson Baxter, daughter and son-in-law Becky Baxter Paris and R.L. Paris, grandchildren Andrew Tierce and Molly Baxter, great grandchildren, Ariah Sanchez and Jaden Benefield, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, David Baxter, his parents E. John and Mollie Clements Baxter, brothers E.J. Baxter Jr., Grady Baxter, sisters Bobbie Jean Baxter and Avanell Baxter Daves.

Billy was born in the Nickelsville community where he grew up.  He graduated from Calhoun High School in 1954 where he was a four-sport letterman and attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Emory at Oxford. He began his career in the banking industry at C & S Bank and was later president of Calhoun Federal Savings and Loan. After retiring from banking, he farmed, and owned and operated several businesses, including Adamson’s Dry Cleaners and Ginger’s Grocery. Billy was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1977.  He was a member of BPOE Elks Lodge No. 1883, the Jaycees, and the Rotary Club.

Billy was a founding member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Calhoun, where he was Senior Warden, Junior Warden and a member of the Vestry.

Billy was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a particularly active saltwater fisherman at his second home on Shellman’s Bluff on the Georgia coast for many years. He was a loyal fan of the University of Georgia Bulldogs.

The memorial service honoring Billy’s life will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, August 15th, and will be a private service due to concerns regarding COVID 19 and limited seating capacity. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Gordon County Child Advocacy Center, 189 Professional Court,Suite 200, Calhoun, GA 30701, 706-602-2184.
