Obituary

Mr. Wilton L. "Buck" Baker, Sr. 98, of Calhoun, passed away at his residence on Saturday, March 13, 2021 following several years declining health.
Mr. Baker was born in Gordon County, Georgia on May 7, 1922. He was the son of the late Wash C. Baker and Carlee Williams Baker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Willix Baker on June 18, 2008, three sisters, Maybell Clark, Nell Howard Johnson and Annie Clark, two brothers, Lester Baker and Boyd Baker. Prior to retirement, he worked in the textile industry, Lockheed Martin, GA Department of Transportation and was a chicken and cattle farmer. He was a member of Plainview Baptist Church and was ordained and began to serve as a Deacon on June 22, 1958 and continued to serve until ill health prevented him from doing so. He was a veteran of the United States Army being inducted on May 20, 1943 at Camp Gordon, GA. and honorably discharged on November 22, 1945. He served in World War II, having seen extensive action on the battlefield in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, he was an expert marksman having earned the EAMET Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Award, and World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Baker is survived by one son; Wilton Baker Jr. and his wife Carole of Calhoun, daughter; Penny Baker Quale and her husband Bill of Cummings, Ga. Grandchildren; Dawn Baker Kemp and her husband Greg, Eric Baker and his wife Evette, Elliott Shaw, Matthew Shaw and his wife Melissa, Kellen Burklin. Great Grandchildren; Macy Kemp, Jack Kemp, Olivia Baker, Jacob Baker, Gavin Shaw and Isaac Shaw; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A service to celebrate the life of Wilton L. "Buck" Baker will be conducted Tuesday, March 16th at 2:00 PM at Plainview Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Hibberts and Rev. Gary Hibberts officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Brent Jones conducting the graveside service. Military honors will be accorded by the United States Army Honor Guard. Pallbearers serving will be the grandsons and great grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are, K.O. & Thelma Cornwell ,Robert Davis, Claire Hicks, Charlie Allen, Charles Coker, Ronnie Everette , Cindy & Keith Knowles, Deb Dempsey, Doug Dempsey, Larry Turner, Sue Hibberts ,His faithful caregivers: David Whisenhunt ,Lori Godsey, Debra Smith, and Kellie Craig.
The family will receive friends at Plainview Baptist Church Tuesday, March 16th beginning at 12:00 Noon until the funeral hour.
For those in attendance, please keep in mind the current guidelines and restrictions set forth by the CDC as it pertains to social gatherings including social distancing, gathering limits, and face masks.
The family would like to thank the caregivers and Homespun Hospice for all that they did for their father and grandfather.
