Obituary

William "Bill" Henry McGee, 72, of Calhoun died Tuesday, February 26, 2019. He was born in Tilton, AZ on May 2, 1946, son of the late Henry Zebedin and Bessie Mae Connley McGee. Bill was raised in Oilton, OK and Wilcox, AZ and relocated to GA for his military career.
Bill joined the US Navy in 1962 as an underage recruit, and was sent to San Diego, CA for boot camp during the Cuban missile crisis. One day, all of the recruits were taken from training and placed temporarily as guards around the post so regular troops could go onto ships, going to Cuba if needed. Bill and several other guys were put on gate guard duty at the front gate. President Kennedy came through the gate one day, and Bill got to see him and his guards, and salute them when they went through. After recovering from bronchial pneumonia in his eleventh week of training, he was told he could stay in the Navy if he started all over with boot camp, or go home since he was underage. He elected to go home, since he had only five weeks to go. After two months and 18 days, he was honorably discharged from the Navy. Bill entered the US Army in 1966 on the 180 day delayed program, and served over 5 years of active service. His active and reserve service totaled 30 years.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Veronica and Larry Bramlett, Jr.; grandchildren, William Heath McGee and his wife Jennifer and Samual McGee; great-grandchildren, Elena Blanchard, David Lane Pettijean, and Aspen McGee; a step-son, Steven Presley and his wife Rebekah; and a best friend, Thomas Almond.
The family will have a private service at a later date, and Bill will be laid to rest at Georgia National Cemetery.
