William 'Bill' Louis Blankenship

Obituary

William Louis Blankenship, 89, of Rydal (Calhoun) Georgia passed away Thursday, April 22 at Redmond Hospital, Rome, Georgia. He was the son of the late John Herschel Blankenship and Marion Carlton Godfrey Blankenship. He was preceded in death by brothers, Frank Edward Blankenship, Herschel Dewitt Blankenship, John LeRoy Blankenship, and Walter Eugene Blankenship, Sr.
William, better known as Bill, was a loving husband and wonderful dad to his children. He was also known as Uncle Bill and Mr. Bill by many. He brought laughter and joy to many. He always had a way to make you smile.
Bill was known for his passion for gardening. He grew beautiful flowers along with vegetables. He spent a lot of time with his children, coaching basketball, taking them to play ball and most of all showing the love of Christ to them. He taught his children by example.
Bill served His Lord in many ways. He taught childrens Sunday School for over 40 years and more recently helped in Awanas. He enjoyed helping children memorize Bible verses. He was ordained as a deacon at The Baptist Tabernacle, Atlanta, and then served as a member of First Baptist Church, Smyrna, Georgia, and after moving to Calhoun in 2016 he joined Belmont Baptist Church. For many years he led the Mens Prayer Group at Smyrna First Baptist.
He served in the Navy from 1951-1955, where he became a welder.
He spent much of his career working in the Sheet Metal Local 85 in several positions including Business Manager, Business Agent and HVAC technician. After retirement he then served in his church as Maintenance Director for 4 years.
He is survived by his wife, Twilamae Travis of 59 years; daughters, Sharon (Marty) Vess of Rydal, Georgia and Kathy (Brad) Bernard of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; son Bryan (Christie) Blankenship of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren: Joshua (Meghan) Vess, Jake (Julianna)Vess, Heather Vess, J.T. Vess; Dylan (Shelby) Bernard, Bryce Bernard; Meghan Ruth Blankenship. Sister Janet Blankenship Bass; brothers Hubert (Joan) Blankenship and Jarrett Blankenship.
A celebration of life service will be held Monday at 3:00 PM, April 26, 2021, at Belmont Baptist Church, Calhoun, Georgia with Pastor Stephen Williams officiating. Visitation will be at 2:00 PM until the funeral hour of 3:00 PM. The service will be recorded and available later at www.maxbrannonandsons.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Georgia Baptist Childrens Homes and Family Ministries, Inc. P. O. Box 329, Palmetto, GA 30268; Belmont Baptist Church, 275 West Belmont Drive Calhoun, GA 30701 or a charity of your choice.
It is suggested that masks be worn and social distancing guidelines be followed for your safety and the safety of others.
