Obituary

'The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD.' Job 1:21
On April 14, 1931, God brought Robert Hudgens into this world, born in the Hall Memorial community of Gordon County to Andrew and Minnie (Godfrey) Hudgens. Now, over 91 years later, on October 30, 2022, He has taken him to heaven to be with Himself. Robert passed away peacefully at his beloved home in the Sonoraville community, surrounded by his loving family.
Robert was a lifelong member of the Calhoun/Gordon County community. He was widely known and respected, a true friend to so many in our area. His life spanned three careers. For roughly the first 20 years of his adult working life, he ran his own plumbing and electrical business. Then he owned and operated Hudgens Wholesale Supply, building materials and hardware store located on South Wall Street in Calhoun, for over a decade. Following that, he was the Gordon County Building inspector for approximately 15 years. During those years, he also pastored several churches in the county. Robert was the founding pastor and a current member of Grace Baptist Church in Sonoraville. He was hard-working, a genuine people person, and a wonderful storyteller. Above all, he was a Godly man who loved, led, and inspired his family.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Minnie (Godfrey) Hudgens, a brother Sam Hudgens, a sister Evelyn Stewart, and a son-in-law Steve Sparks.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Marian, who tirelessly and selflessly cared for him over the last several years, as Alzheimer's increasingly took its toll. Marian was by his side in their home, wonderfully assisted by hospice staff during the last week and a half of his life, until he took his last breath.
Robert is also survived by a son, Donnie Hudgens and his wife, Hope, and a daughter, Susan Sparks. Surviving grandchildren, who adored their Pawpaw, are Drew (Leah) Sparks, Josh (Tina) Hudgens, Missy (Colby) Duckett, Matthew (Heather) Hudgens, Abby (Chance) Fowler, and Hannah (Isaac) Holbert. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren (with number eleven on the way) who have also come to cherish their Pawpaw just as their parents do. Other members of his extended family also survive. Pallbearers serving will be his grandsons and the husbands of his granddaughters. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Grace Baptist Church.
Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements. Family and friends will be received during a time of visitation from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, November 2, at Grace Baptist Church, located at 1996 Cash Rd, SE, Calhoun. The funeral service will also be held at the church on Thursday, November 3, at 11:00 am.
The Brannon Family and staff are honored to serve the family of Robert Hudgens.
