Robert Edsel “Red” Robbins
Red Robbins, age 95, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 26, 2023. Red was born June 8, 1927. He lived his young life in Resaca, Georgia and graduated from Resaca High School. After graduation, he was in the United States Army and was a World War II veteran. Red was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff Robbins and Etta Causby Robbins, one son, Thomas Michael Robbins, brothers T.J. Robbins, Philip Robbins, and sisters, Jewel Defoor, Opal Davis and Vennie Maude Cox. Red was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Rick Tamplin.
Red is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mattie Sue Rogers Robbins, daughters Ginger (Larry) House of Calhoun, GA and Carol Tamplin of Newnan, GA. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Suzanne House Roberts of Calhoun, GA, Julianne (Mill) Graves of Atlanta, GA, and Sarah (Preston) Hagler of Newnan, GA. Five great grandchildren also survive, Mary Roberts of Calhoun, Penn and Arthur Graves of Atlanta, and Eliza and Howie Hagler of Newnan. Many other relatives and nieces and nephews survive.
Red was a member of First Baptist Church of Calhoun. He was a member of the Oothcaloga Lodge #154 Free and accepted Masons and received his 70 year apron in 2021.
Red was a local businessman in the community for many years. He was co-owner of the original Napa Auto Parts store for several years. He then purchased the Standard Oil Agency distribution center in Calhoun, opened the Calhoun Auto Parts store, and contracted and built several homes and buildings around Calhoun. His goal was to always provide for his family to the best of his ability.
He loved his cars, gardening and growing tomatoes to share with family and friends, watching the Braves, and fishing. He especially enjoyed boating and water skiing where he and his family and friends spent many summers enjoying Lake Allatoona and Carters Lake. Family and friends were very important to him and he always wanted to help them in any way he could.
Pallbearers will be Vaughn Robbins, Steve Robbins, Ricky Robbins, Kirk Robbins, Lynn Phipps and Dr. Mitch Frix. Honorary pallbearers will be Stanley Simpson, Buck McBee, Jim Hobgood and members of the morning breakfast group and the Faith Seekers Sunday School class at First Baptist church.
The family would like to thank Homespun Hospice for their care, and a special thank you to his caregiver for the last several months, Inez Owens.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Calhoun First Baptist Church from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm with the funeral to follow at 1:00 pm with Dr. Bert Vaughn and Dr. John Barber officiating. Burial will follow at Fain Cemetery with military honors accorded by the United States Army Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Faith Seekers Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, United Way of Calhoun, or to your favorite charity.
