Melvie Marie (Newborn) Johnson

Melvie Marie (Newborn) Johnson, 89, of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away peacefully in her daughter's home on Saturday, July 4, 2026.

Melvie was born on December 7, 1936, in Edwardsville, Alabama, to the late William Thomas and Mary Newborn. Melvie was a committed Christian to the Lord. She found much comfort in her life reading her Bible and listening to Christian music. Her faith was demonstrated by providing Christian hospitality to others. She was a member of Erwin Hill Church of God in Adairsville, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Billy James Johnson in 2021; her only son, Wendell Johnson in 2024; brothers, B. F. Newborn, J.T. Newborn, Charlie Newborn, and Fred Newborn; her sisters, Aledas Walker, Vertie Walker, Vernes Biles, Lois Junior, Pearlie Smith, and Felmer Cook.

She lived a life devoted in service to her family and lovingly cared for her disabled son, Wendell, faithfully for 71 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Petty; her grandchildren, Jamie Petty, Chris Petty, Natasha Petty, and Nathan Petty; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Petty, Matthew Petty, Michaella Petty, lsabella Petty, Jessie Ruth Petty, Christopher Michael Petty, and Lance Petty; her great-great grandchild, Esme; one sister-in-law, UnaV Newborn; and many beloved nephews and nieces.

A funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Erwin Hill Church of God, Adairsville, Georgia, at 11 AM with Jamie Petty and Rev. Jamey Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Erwin Hill Church of God Cemetery. Pallbearers are Eddie Biles, Freddie Biles, Dale Biles, Jamie Petty, Nathan Petty, and Ken Ray.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM prior to the service.
