Obituary
Melea Stamey Cook passed away, while surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, September 3, 2021. Melea was born in Dalton on September 15, 1978.
Melea is survived by her loving husband, Mickey Cook; her parents, Mike and Myra Sutherland Stamey; her grandmother, Lena Stamey; her brother, Matthew (Tiffany) Stamey; a special niece, Brooklyn Stamey; her step-son, Dustin Cook; many other relatives and close friends. She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, O'Dell and Lillie West, Andrew and Leona Sutherland, Luther and Annie Rosson, and Bryan and Grace Stamey; her grandparents, A.B. and Peggy Sutherland and Ray Stamey.
Melea attended Belwood Elementary where she was a member of 4-H and Chorus. At Sonoraville Middle School, Melea continued chorus and 4-H while she added basketball and softball. At Gordon Central High School, where Melea graduated in the Class of 1997, she was in 4-H, chorus, played basketball and soft ball and was a member (and chosen by her peers as president) of FFA. After high school, Melea attended Dalton State University and Kennesaw State University where she graduated with a degree in teaching. Her teaching career began at Tolbert Elementary School and she taught at W.L. Swain Elementary. After her marriage to Mickey in 2008, Melea taught at Unity Elementary School in LaGrange, Georgia. In 2012, she and Mickey began M and M Livestock. With her passion for 4-H and FFA, she and Mickey produced and raised many champion lambs to help her students with their projects. She and Mickey were active in Faith Baptist Church in Roanoake, Alabama. With her family in Calhoun, Melea was a member of Eastgate Baptist Church. Melea worked hard at her passions; she won numerous titles and competitions over the years including being Grand Champion winner of the Georgia State Fair in 1997.
Melea's family will receive friends on Sunday, September 5, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Eastgate Baptist Church. The family will also receive friends Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Eastgate Baptist Church. The funeral service will be conducted on Monday, September 6, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. from Eastgate Baptist Church. Pastor Kenny Rogers will officiate with Rev. Scott Whaley, and Rev. Clinton Green. Burial will follow in the family plot at Blackwood Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Gary, Alex, Kurt, and Aaron Sutherland, Scott Wyllie, and Mark Williamson; her 'show-kids', past and present, will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family requests that instead of flowers, donations in Melea's memory be made to the Heard County Livestock Show. She and her family are proud to support this cause.
