Mary Wheat

January 5, 1915 — March 22, 2007

Mrs. Mary Wheat, age 92, of Calhoun, passed away Thursday, March 22, 2007 at Gordon Hospital. She was born in Floyd County on January 5th, 1915, daughter of the late John and Ida Pennington Swinford. She moved to Gordon County at age 16, and was a member of Sugar Valley Baptist Church. Mrs. Wheat retired from public works in 1951 to become a full time home maker. She did child care in her home for 23 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Wheat; two sisters, Mrs. Bell Culberson and Mrs. Ida Adams; and five brothers; Elmer, Elbert, Thornton, Herman, and Carlton Swinford.

Survivors include a daughter, Jane Whittle and her husband Terry of Calhoun; and two sons, Kenneth Wheat of Calhoun, and Steve Wheat of Dalton. Five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Wheat will be conducted at 2:30pm Sunday, March 25, 2007, from the Sugar Valley Baptist Church with Rev. Mitch Phillips, Rev. Howard Duvall, and Rev. Clifford Free officiating. Mrs. Wheat will lie in state at the church on Sunday from 1:30pm until 2:30pm. Interment will follow in the Sugar Valley Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Terry Whittle, Danny Whittle, Steven Wheat, Kyle Lawless Wheat, Wayne Swinford, and Michael Brent. These gentlemen are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:00pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 5:00pm until 9:00pm.
