Obituary

Mr. Lee Mathis passed away on September 17, 2022.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann Hall Mathis, their two sons and wives -- Rodney and Nancy Mathis and Roger and Tommye Mathis, and two grandchildren and their spouses -- Bryant and Ashley Mathis and Natalie Mathis and Robert Sevin.
Mr. Mathis was born John William Lee Mathis on April 17, 1933, the son of John Franklin Mathis and Clara Owen Mathis in Sonoraville, GA. He graduated from the 1950 class of Sonoraville High School and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After service he worked at Lockheed and then for forty years with Scoggin McBrayer Furniture Company until his retirement. After retirement, he worked another 15 years with his close friend Harold Crump at Ace Hardware in Calhoun, GA where he always enjoyed talking with friends and customers.
Lee was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, growing up at Wesley Chapel UMC and then raising his family at Nellie Peters UMC where he served for many years as Sunday School Superintendent.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister and brother-in-law Sybil Mathis Dutton and Hansel Dutton, and his nephew Samuel Lee Dutton.
Other surviving family members include his nieces and nephews Cindy Edwards, Patricia Bailey, Pam McEntire, Troy Dutton, Carol Quinn, Bobby Hall, Ron Hall, and Jamie Graham and many others who were all dear and special to him.
Visitation will be held at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where he will lie in state beginning 2:00 pm. Graveside services willfollow at Chandler Cemetery. Rev. Greg Burgner and Rev. William Lanford will preside.
Pallbearers are Kevin Allen, Scott Clements, Jamie Graham, Bobby Hall, Walter Harris, Kelly Quinn, and Greg Nesbitt. Honorary Pallbearers are Harold Crump, Jerome Crump, James McDaniel, and Rev. Gary Hibberts.
Donations can be made in Mr. Mathis memory to the Scholarship Fund for the Hospital Authority Board of Gordon County at P.O. Box 2416 Calhoun, Georgia 30703.
The Brannon family and staff are honored to serve the Mathis family.
