John "Phillip" Bailey

John “Phillip” Bailey passed away peacefully at his Sugar Valley home surrounded by family and friends on March 2, 2026. He was born on April 11, 1945 to Ruby Lee Kendall and Milas Wesley Bailey in Dial, Georgia.

Phillip will always be remembered as a loving and steadfast husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Phillip retired from Roadway Express Trucking Company when he was 57. He found joy in fishing, hunting and playing poker with the guys. He loved tinkering and building gadgets and keepsakes for his family and friends in his shop out back.

Nothing made Phillip happier than enjoying his time outdoors. Whether it was gardening at home in Sugar Valley or working at the cabin in the mountains of Dial, Georgia where he was raised, Phillip was a true outdoorsman.

He especially loved the water. From fishing trips with Terri’s dad, Wayne and all the Bailey boys to beach trips with Terri, Phillip enjoyed his retirement to the fullest.

Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Terri Branton Bailey, his son, John (Angie) Bailey, grandson, Braden (Hayley) Bailey, great-grandson, Braxton Bailey, all of Calhoun. Surviving siblings include David Bailey (Betty Jo) of Calhoun, Evaline (Jack) Bailey Logan of Ellijay, and sister-in-law Dana Branton Bailey of Calhoun. Other survivors include his nephews Allen Bailey, Darren (Angie) Bailey, Brian (Sacha) Bailey, Branton Bailey, Danny (Shanan) Bailey, Derek (Allyson) Bailey, nieces Christina (Doug) Duncan-Lothamer, Denise (Roger) Howell, Pam (Terry) Robinson, and Laura Gee, and mother-in-law Celina Branton.

Many other family members and close friends survive with special mention to his lifelong buddy, Harvey Blackstock, who was like a brother to Phillip.

Preceding Phillip in death are his parents, siblings, Dan Bailey of Mableton, Sue Bailey Chumbler of Gainesville and niece, Opal (Barry) Roberts of Flowery Branch. Also preceding in death was Phillip’s father-in-law, Wayne Branton.

Phillip will be remembered as a faithful friend. A humble man who was always willing to help others with a warm smile and a laugh. His family and friends will continue his legacy with grateful hearts for his love of life and kindness for all.

On January 17, 2026, a very cool day at Navarre Beach, Florida, Phillip gave an amazing testimony of faith, as he was cleansed of his burdens in his obedience of Baptism, following his profession of salvation. The waters were cold, but his mission was steadfast and true. And there he began his journey home.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for May 30, 2026 at their home in Sugar Valley. Future announcements will follow.
