Obituary

Mr. Joel A. Ables, 82, a well-known resident of Calhoun, passed away peacefully at his residence Sunday, January 2, 2022, after 3 weeks of declining health.
Joel was born in Gordon County, Georgia on March 30, 1939, son of the late James Meredith Ables and Doris Fuller Ables. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shelba Gallman Ables; sisters, Anita Ables Carnes, and Sandra Ables Balch.
Joel loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. He was a lifelong resident of Gordon County and was a licensed Plumber and Electrician having owned and operated Joel Ables Plumbing and Electrical for many years. Prior to that, he was employed by Glassrock Industries for 36 years. He was a graduate of Calhoun High School class of 1958.
Survivors include his daughter, Stacie Ables; his son, Jeffery Ables and his fianc, Tina Morrison; grandchildren, Jarrett Ables, Lacey Jade Ables, Jenna Ables, and Griff Bryant; great-grandson, Cash Ables; sisters, Carolyn (Frank) Jones, Helen Holcomb and Pam (Darrel) Cooper; brother, David (Nina) Ables; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services for Mr. Joel Ables will be held Wednesday, January 5th at 2:00 PM from West Union Baptist Church with Rev. Lamar Bearden and Rev. Gary Hibberts officiating. Music will be arranged by Stacy Bradford. Burial will follow in West Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers serving will include, Preston Aker Jr., Billy Hiles, Danny Lovingood, David Ables, Frank Jones, Alan Jackson, Griff Bryant, Jarrett Ables, and Cash Ables. Honorary pallbearers will include, D.J. Ables, Chris Blalock, Brian Jones, Russell Jones, Tim Carnes, Bo Carnes, Steve Carnes, Dwight Walraven, Brian Lyles, Larry Bearden, Harold Zacharia, Dwight Albriton, Larry Reno, and Jerry Carter. The honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at West Union Baptist Church Wednesday at 1:45 PM.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 4th at Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home between the hours of 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
