Herchel Miller Sexton

Herchel Miller Sexton, 85, of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. He was born on October 30, 1937, to the late James “M.C.” and Viola Sexton. He was preceded in death by his brothers, B.W. Sexton, L.V. Sexton, and Max Sexton; sisters, Dimple Rogers, Opal Wable, Virginia Burch, and Jewel Kiser.

Herchel always enjoyed planting a big garden and hunting and fishing and was a member of New Town Baptist Church.

Herchel is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Shelba Jean Sexton; sons, Doug Sexton (Lisa), Donnie Sexton (Denese), and Daryl Sexton (Leslie); daughter, Pam Abernathy (Bryan); grandchildren, Brittany, Ashley, Natalie, Dayne, Bo, Carla, Dena, Jax, Maggy, Tori, and Katie; thirteen great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Norris (Wilma) Sexton and special caregiver and friend, Judy Hall.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, March 2, 2023, at 5:00 PM from New Town Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Hare, Norris Sexton, and Tony Samples officiating. Music will be arranged by the New Town Quartet. Burial will follow in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Donnie Sexton, Jax Abernathy, Dayne Sexton, Dalyn Harris, Max Burgess, Bo McEntyre, Chris Mast, and Sam Burgess. Honorary pallbearers are Gunnar Pullen, Mac Taylor, Danny Dobson, Sid Painter, Harmon Holcomb, Charlie Allen, Rev. Mitch Phillips, Thomas Greeson, James Hyde, Steve Black, Johnny McDougle, Jason Epperson, James Clark, and Lamar Holland.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 2, 2023, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at New Town Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Newtown Baptist Church Wild Game Supper in memory of Herchel Sexton. Donations can be mailed to 897 Newtown Church Rd NE, Calhoun, GA 30701.
