Obituary

Mr. Gordon Lee Craig, 89, of the Carter's Lake Community, Ellijay, and for many years a resident of Gordon County, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Gordon Healthcare after several years of declining health. He was born in Gordon County in the Oakman Community on April 15, 1928, son of the late John William Craig, Sr. and Zena Puckett Craig. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Bill Craig, and sisters, Hannah Nix and Betty Herndon.
Mr. Craig was a graduate of Fairmount High School Class of 1945. He received his bachelor's degree from Piedmont College and master's and specialist degrees from Western Carolina University and the University of West Georgia. He served in the United States Army in the medics during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Craig was for many years affiliated with Gordon County Schools as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal of Fairmount Schools. He also served as assistant superintendent of Gordon County Schools. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church at Oakman.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Walraven Craig; his daughter, Celeste McClellan of Lawrenceville; his son, Dwight Craig of Fairmount; and a grandson, Craig McClellan of Nashville, Tennessee and his wife, Laura. He is also survived by his brother, Henry Craig of Kennesaw. In addition, he is survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Services to honor the life of Mr. Craig will be held Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. from Trinity Baptist Church, with Reverend Eddie Brannon and Reverend Tim Cheathem officiating. Mr. Craig's body will lie in state at the church on Saturday, from noon until 1:00 p.m. Music will be arranged by Joy Dodd. Burial will follow in the family plot at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers serving are Neil Nix, Mark Herndon, David Gibson, Arvil Craig, Jr., Matt Fox, and Mark Owens. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fairmount High School Class of 1969.
The Craig Family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Friday, March 9, 2018, from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staffs of Gordon Healthcare and Gordon Hospital for their loving care of Mr. Craig. Memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Craig to any charity.
