Gary C. Fleck

January 30, 1949 — May 9, 2025

Gary Cole Fleck, 76, entered the kingdom of God on May 9, 2025 at his residence due to a pulmonary embolism. His sudden departure has left his family and friends deeply saddened and shocked.

Gary was born in Birmingham, Alabama on January 30, 1949 to Julius C. Fleck and Beverly C. Fleck. He graduated from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, TN in 1967 and went on to a successful career in telecommunications working for Western Electric Corporation as well as several other telecommunications companies. He eventually became an invaluable trouble shooter in the industry, traveling the country when needed.

Gary never met a stranger. He had the unique ability to put anyone at ease with his exceptional humor and easy going nature. He was an outdoorsman who loved anything from hunting & fishing to spending time with special friends at “deer camp”. Gary also had a creative artistic talent. He was a gifted artist who enjoyed drawing and painting. He made many wonderful pieces like beautiful crosses using horseshoes and gorgeous wooden bowls from walnut. Gary had an instinctive aptitude for construction. He built some incredible furniture pieces, proudly displayed in his family home. His last project was the extraordinary transformation of a small enclosed trailer into a one man camper. There was not much he couldn’t build or repair.

Most of all, Gary loved spending time with his family. Known as “Pop” to his grandchildren, there was endless fun whether playing in the pool, at a ballgame, or cards around the kitchen table. There was always plenty of love and laughter.

Gary grew up in the Presbyterian church and was a committed believer in God as our Creator and Savior. He currently attended Rock Bridge Community Church in Calhoun, Georgia.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Julius C. Fleck and Beverly C. Fleck, his daughter, Laura Hankins and son-in-law, Brooks Carson. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Dixie, daughters Amy Carson and April (Joey) Shiflett, grandchildren Colton Carson, Olivia Carson, Avery Shiflett, Zoie Shiflett and his sister, Barbara Patton. He leaves behind his brother-in-law, Thomas (Bert) Nisbet and his sister-in-law, Christy Foster. Gary is survived by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins as well as friends who became family. They will miss him dearly.

A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held on Saturday, August 2. The family will provide details at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association in memory of Gary. Please visit https://pages.heart.org/why-give-now and select "Dedicate this donation" to put it in Gary's memory.

John 14:2,3

2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
