Fleming Winn Conyers

Mr. Fleming Winn Conyers of Oglethorpe, GA, formerly of Calhoun, passed away July 2, 2007 at the age of 91.He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, January 26, 1916. He is preceded in death by his parents Arthur Charles Conyers and Margaret Williams Winn Conyers, four brothers and one sister and an infant daughter, Arleen Shannon Conyers. He was a graduate of Valdosta High School, Valdosta Georgia and Jacksonville Junior College, Jacksonville, Florida. His hobbies included sports, travel and his grandchildren.

He served in WW11 as a non commissioned officer with HQHQ Company 507th of the 82nd Airborne as an airborne paratrooper. In the (Battle of the Bulge) he was wounded and received a purple heart. He was awarded a Bronze Star for valor beyond the call of duty and also five Oak Leaf Clusters representing the battles he participated in during the war. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, and served as a Selectman in the Midway Society of Midway Georgia. He was a past president of the Southside Rotary Club, Jacksonville, Florida; past president of the Calhoun Georgia Rotary Club, a 32nd Mason, a life member of the Morocco Shrine of Jacksonville Florida, a life member of the Calhoun Elks Club, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, past president of the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Rome, Georgia chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was retired from the Rome Coca Cola Bottling Company.

Mr. Conyers is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Margaret Conyers and his daughter, Margaret Kim and her husband C.B. Cornett of Macon Georgia. He has three grandchildren; Caleb Kristen and Katie Cornett all of Macon, Georgia; and a Sister-in Law, Mary Conyers, widow of Christopher Conyers, Naples, Florida; Margaret Winn Conyers, Lancaster, Pa; Nancy Conyers, Shanghai, China; Judy Conyers, Harrisburg, Pa; Christopher Conyers,(Jill), Daniele and Christopher, Jr., Naples, Florida; Arthur Charles Conyers, Jr ( Harriet), Katherine Manush( Stan), Lori Webster( Lance)all of Birmingham Beverly Riccardi (Victor) Atlanta; Melinda Conyers, widow of David Conyers, Adam, Paul, Sam and Alexis all of Sacramento; Julie Martin ( Jerry), Riceboro, Georgia, Fleming Martin ( Lisa) St Simons Island, Van Jones Martin ( Barbara), Savannah; Dr. Peter Martin ( Cathy),Statesboro, Georgia, Mack Martin (Martha), St. Simons Island and Patty Austin, Quitman, Georgia. Funeral services for Mr. Fleming Winn Conyers will be conducted Saturday, July 7, at 11:00am from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Jan Rhodes and Jim Franklin officiating. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 1:00pm in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cartersville. Active pallbearers will include Rich Guinter, Marion Fleming Martin, Dr. Peter Winn Martin, Van Martin, Dr. Victor Riccardi, and Bob Welch. These gentlemen are asked to meet at the funeral home Saturday at 10:30am. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening between the hours of 6:00pm and 9:00pm.
