Charles “Norman” Shaw, formerly of Calhoun, GA, entered the gates of Heaven on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland F. Shaw and Georgia Alta Yarbrough Shaw; brothers, Bill and James Shaw; sister, Betty Ann Smith; son, Matt Shaw; and his wife of 58 years, Earnestine Watson Shaw.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Karen Shaw; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Katie and Josh Shaw; and great-granddaughters, Georgia and Sadie Shaw, all of Fountain, Florida. He also leaves behind many special friends, cousins, and extended family members.
Norman was born on a beautiful spring day, May 27, 1938. He was the oldest of four siblings, and they grew up living a simple life in North Georgia. He graduated from Johnson High School at age 18, and in August 1959, he entered the United States Army.
Norman and his brother Bill spent 31 months in Frankfurt, Germany. Norman received the prestigious Army Commendation Medal in July 1962, and the two brothers later returned home to Rome. In addition to their service, their younger brother, James Shaw, served during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1966. We are deeply thankful for their service to our nation.
After deployment, Norman worked in the textile industry for many years and retired as a plant manager from Carriage Inc.
He met the love of his life through mutual friends. Norman Shaw and Earnestine Watson were married on December 10, 1964. Their first child, Tim, was born in 1966, and their second child, Matt, followed in 1974. They built a good life together in Rome, Georgia.
Although tragedy struck in 1991 with the sudden passing of his son Matt, Norman’s faith never wavered. When asked, “How did you get through that?” he simply responded, “Because I know I will see him again one day.” Imagine the reunion in Heaven.
He and his family moved to Northwest Florida in 2014, where he enjoyed the warm weather, fishing, and the simple lifestyle of Florida livin’. He loved feeding the deer with his girls and watching the birds on his property.
Norman volunteered his time in service to others and donated to several charities, including St. Jude and St. Joseph’s Indian School. He and his wife Earnestine, founded the Kentucky Project in 1993, helping the needy in Harlan, KY.
Norman was a devout Christian who exemplified the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ, every day. We have no doubt he is hearing the words from Matthew 25:23: “Well done, good and faithful servant!"
Pallbearers include Tim Shaw, Nelson Smith, Tony Flowers, Danny Watson, Justin Smith, and Marcus Desmond.
Visitation is Saturday March 21, 2026, from Noon until 2pm with the service immediately following at the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Smith will be officiating. Interment will follow at Gordon Memorial Gardens, 575 Highway 53 E Calhoun, GA 30701 with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to your favorite charity or do something kind for someone.
Thank you from the Shaw family.
