Thomas "Grover" Lunsford

Mr. Thomas "Grover" Lunsford, 76, of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023. He was born in Chatsworth, Georgia, on January 22, 1947, to the late Demetrius and Opal Rogers Lunsford. He was preceded in death by his brother, D.W. Lunsford Jr.

A stellar athlete who lettered in football, basketball, and track, he graduated from Murray County High School in 1965.

Prior to his career at State Farm, Grover was a manager for Liberty National Life Insurance. Earlier in his career, he worked at Lee Office Supply in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Western Union.

In 1974, he began his State Farm Insurance Agency in Calhoun. It sits atop the hill at the intersection of Hwy. 53 and Hwy. 53 Spur today. Known for honesty and integrity when working with his clients, Grover provided auto, home, health, commercial, boat, life, renters, and mobile home insurance to many in the community throughout the past 48 years. He was still managing the office at the time of his death.

Grover served in various capacities as a member of Belmont Baptist Church from 1974 through 2022. He was the treasurer at the church for 38 years and also served for many years as a trustee and deacon. He was part of the Sportsman Sunday School Class while he attended Belmont and was a major contributor to the Good News Club, a weekly Christian program for children featuring a Bible lesson, songs, memory verses, and games. At the time of his death, he and his wife, Nona, attended Calhoun First Baptist Church.

Grover is survived by his loving wife, Nona Lee Kidd Lunsford; son, Scott Lunsford; brother, Edwin Lunsford; sisters, Nina Bowman, Doris Hammond, and Jeanette Sluder; grandchildren, Ethan and Addison Lunsford. Nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives also survive.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at 2:00 PM from Calhoun First Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Oliver, Dr. John Barber, Rev. Jeff Hawkins, and Rev. Eddie Brannon officiating. His body will lie in state at the church from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Entombment will follow in Chandler Cemetery. Pallbearers are Roger Mathis, Heath Mitchell, Sean Knight, Michael Scott, Roger Gresham, and Brad Price. Honorary pallbearers are Don Smith, Buck McBee, Walter McBee, Lewis Hayes, Jerry Lovelace, CJ Dodd, Raymond Ross, Jason Hawkins, Lee Wilson, Jerry Raper, Wayne Peardon, Levon Dempsey, Roger Rigney, and John Kennemer.
