Robert Hampton "Hamp" Alexander Sr., affectionately known as "Coach", 85, of Calhoun, died Saturday, November 16, 2019 at his residence following an extended illness.
Hamp was born on August 18, 1934 in Borden Springs, AL, son of the late Justus Alexander and Minnie Bell Adcock Alexander. Later the family moved from Alabama to Adairsville, GA, where he graduated from Adairsville High School. He received his Bachelors degree from North Georgia College. After graduation he entered the United States Army, serving from 1958 to 1960. Hamp began his coaching and teaching career at Adairsville High School, followed by Calhoun High School, Shorter College in Rome, GA, Southern Tech in Marietta, GA, and Gilmer County High School in Ellijay, GA. During his baseball coaching career, Coach Alexander posted 497 wins, six conference championships, and four District 25 Championships. In basketball, his teams won two conference titles. He coached numerous all-conference baseball and basketball players, including seven baseball NAIA All-Americans, and 13 players who signed professional contracts. He was voted Coach of the Year six times in baseball, and twice in basketball. He was inducted into the Shorter College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
Hamp is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Joy Pass Alexander; his daughters, Susan Hyde and her husband James of Calhoun, Sabrina Poole and her husband Blake of Calhoun, and Vicki Darnell and her husband Keith of Bowling Green, KY; his sons, Hamp Alexander Jr. and his wife Diane of Adairsville, and Greg Alexander of Rome; a brother, James Alexander of Adairsville; his grandchildren, Ken Jones, Gabe Jones, Jordan Poole, Casey Poole, Trey Alexander, Phillip Alexander, Aubrey Darnell, Garrett Darnell, and Brittany Alexander; and his great-grandchildren, John Jones, Gus Jones, Tilly Darnell, Lucy Alexander, Hudson Alexander, and Reece Alexander.
Funeral services to honor his life will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 6:00 PM from Calhoun First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Bert Vaughn and Rev. Ed Archer officiating. Music will be arranged by Margaret Thornton. Pallbearers serving include Ken Jones, Gabe Jones, Jordan Poole, Casey Poole, K.D. Wright, Tim Wright, and Craig Pass. Honorary pallbearers will consist of his former players.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the Calhoun First United Methodist Church from 3:00 PM until the funeral hour.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Calhoun First United Methodist Church.
