Mr. Gene Mathis

October 16, 1933 — January 19, 2016

Mr. Gene Mathis of Gordon County, age 82, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. He had resided at Wildwood Health Care in Jasper for the past several years.

Gene was born in Gilmer County on October 16, 1933. He attended Ranger School and served in the Air Force from April 1, 1953 until discharge on March 28, 1957. He spent most of his life in Ranger and surrounding areas, and was loved by all who came in contact with him for his sweet presence. Gene was an avid NASCAR fan and loved watching the Atlanta Braves.

He was preceded in death by his wife, to whom he was married for over 50 years, Edna Maxine Mullinax Mathis; father, Lane Mathis; mother, Annie Lee Mulkey Mathis; brother, Clyde Mathis; brothers-in law, Cleburn, Eugene, and Wallace Mullinax; and sister-in-law, Sue Mullinax.

Survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, RL and Betty Mathis of Fairmount, and Terry and Linda Mathis of Adairsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Gary Mosley of Jasper, and Linda and Dave Foster of Calhoun; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rebecca (Becky) Mathis of Nelson, Lorea Thompson of Travelers Rest, SC, Joyce Ridley of Dawsonville, Shirley DeFoor and her husband Randy of Calhoun, James Mullinax of Marietta, and Hazel Mullinax of Jasper. Many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.

Services to honor the life of Mr. Gene Mathis will be held Thursday, January 21st at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Eddie Brannon officiating. Interment will follow in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Ellijay, with military honors. Pallbearers serving will include Kelly Mathis, Lee Mathis, Tony Mulkey, Donny Mulkey, Danny Mulkey, and Brandon Mathis.

The Mathis family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, January 20th from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

The family wishes to thank the Wildwood Health Care staff for their exceptional care of Gene during his stay.
