Obituary

Mr. Kenneth Leon Herron Sr., 82, departed this life for eternal life with Jesus on February 26, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Ken was born on September 10, 1937, in Shelby, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend Doyle Pinkney Herron and Julia Lloyd Herron. Ken graduated from Hartwell High School in 1954 in three years. His last two years he was the Georgia High School State Champion Debater. He then attended Georgia Tech and graduated with honors with a degree in Textile Engineering.
While working in North Carolina he met his wife, Rachel Robinson Herron, and they were married in 1958. They had one son, Kenneth Leon Herron Jr. in 1960. They moved to Calhoun, GA in 1967 as Ken entered the carpet business. His career was first textiles and then carpet and rugs. Ken worked at the manager/vice president level in most of his jobs. His creativity led him to excel and he worked the last years of his career very successfully as an independent consultant mostly in foreign countries. After retiring Ken wrote a weekly column for the Calhoun Times, then the Gordon Gazette. Ken was also an author, publishing several books he had written. Ken was a charter member of Heritage Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years and was a lifelong Republican and ran for several offices, nationally and statewide.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rachel Robinson Herron; his son Kenny Herron and his wife Brenda; one granddaughter, Alex Ray and her husband Jason; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Logan; and two step-grandsons, Aspen York, Jonathan McGraw and his wife Alecks, three step-great granddaughters; Ava, Emily and Olivia McGraw. He is also survived by three brothers Billy, Jimmy, and Eddie, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate the life of Ken Herron will be held Saturday, February 29, 2020, at 4 pm at Heritage Baptist Church with burial to follow in Fain Cemetery. Pallbearers include Stan Mcentyre, Mike Hicks, Shane Hammond, Jeff Rampy, Greg Leatherwood, and Jacob Costa.
The family will receive friends at Heritage Baptist Church, Saturday between the hours of 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
