Obituary

Evelyn Mae (Brown) Thompson, 91, passed away August 30, 2019 in Calhoun, GA. Born on a family 50 acre hillside farm in Barboursville, W.Va. on March 20, 1928, life proved hard through those depression years for her, her 2 sisters and one brother. No running water or electricity in those early days. Often, her father left the farm for months to do construction work in far flung places, leaving the struggling family to eke out a living against the cold winters. When WWII came along and took the men to war and leaving factories without workers, she moved into Huntington W.Va. and worked building explosive ordinance for the war effort while still in her teens. At wars end, she married a returning veteran, James Harold Thompson on May 15, 1945 and began raising a family. James Harold Thompson Jr. was born the following year, and in a few years, her second son, Rex Kenton Thompson, was born completing the little family. Evelyn and James sacrificed everything they had to give their children a better chance in life than they had known. While neither Evelyn or James were able to finish high school, they made it possible for both sons to attend college. When James passed away in 1992 after they had been married for 47 years, she had made her home with James Jr. in Cleveland, TN 23 years and then relocated to live near Rex and Rhonda in Calhoun, GA for the last 4 years. She was delighted to find a happy home of worship at the Calhoun Church of God. Her 90th birthday last year was celebrated by the whole family in an old farmhouse rented for the occasion on top of a tall mountain near Chattanooga with chickens running loose in the yard to remind her of her old mountain home in W.Va. of long ago. Recent illnesses led her to require hospitalization at Gordon Hospital and then rehab at Calhoun Health Care, where she resided at the time of her death. She often spoke appreciably of the extreme kindnesses shown to her by the staffs of both facilities and the family wishes to extend its sincere thanks to all who helped her through final days on earth. Evelyn Mae Thompson loved God, her family and never had a mean thing to say about anyone. We have all lost one of Gods greatest gifts in having this gentle soul touch our lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Oak Lee and Isabelle Brown, her brother; Vasco Brown; and her husband James H. Thompson. She is survived by her sisters; Edna Hazel Ruth, Torrance, CA, Iva Johnson, Portsmouth, OH, sons; James H. Thompson Jr and his wife Joy, Cleveland, TN, Rex K. Thompson and his wife Rhonda, Calhoun, GA, her grandchildren; John Mark Thompson and his wife Alisa, Michael James Thompson, her great grandchildren; Robert Brian Thompson and his wife Kayley, Savannah Kate Thompson, Abigail Grace Thompson, Emma Jane Thompson.
