Obituary

Doris G. Southerland, 73, departed this life on Sunday, April 12, 2020, at Fifth Avenue Nursing Home in Rome, following several years of declining health. She was born in Gordon County, Georgia on September 22, 1946, daughter of the late, Rosa S. Garland and Bob Garland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Southerland, a sister, Lois Welchel, brother, Jimmy Garland, and brothers-in-law, Mike Barber and Shortie Welchel. She was a graduate of Calhoun High School, class of 1964 and from the Carroll School of Business in Rome, prior to her retirement, she was employed with the Department of Family and Children's Service in Whitfield County.
Survivors include a son, Mitch Sorrells, MSGT USAF Ret. of Hopkins, S.C., brother, Herman Garland (Lorene) of Calhoun and a sister, Linda Barber of Calhoun, two granddaughters, Kristiana and Courtney Sorrells of Texas.
Doris always gave more than was given, was willing to give the clothes off her own back to anyone in need, and will be greatly missed by her great-nephew, Jack Barber, and Great-niece, Addie Barber.
The family wants to thank the staff of Fifth Avenue Nursing Home for their love and care.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no formal public visitation or funeral service. She will be buried by her husband, Wesley at Sugar Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.
