Donald Glen Smith

November 30, 1941 — April 6, 2023

Donald Glen Smith, 81, of Calhoun, Georgia passed away peacefully after a long illness on Thursday, April 6, 2023. He was born on November 30, 1941, to the late Rev. Daniel and Jewell (Herndon) Smith. In addition to his parents, Glen was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Joyce Ann Smith, his elder sister Claudia Lanier, and sister-in-law Ruby Lee Smith.


Glen was a veteran who served in the United States Air Force from 1959 until 1965, serving at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan during the Vietnam War.


After the war, Glen returned home and worked briefly for the Georgia Forestry Commission before beginning his thirty-year career as a flight line mechanic with Lockheed Martin Corporation of Marietta, Georgia. At Lockheed, Glen worked on military planes such as the C-130 Hercules and the YF-22 fighter. He received numerous commendations during his tenure with the company. He also worked periodically at Lorain/Koehring Crane Manufacturing in Chattanooga, Tennessee.


Glen was a devoted Christian and faithful member of Riverview Baptist Church. He served as a deacon and taught the adult Sunday school class for over twenty years. He demonstrated his commitment to loving and serving others daily in his role as a dedicated deacon, husband, father, and friend.


Glen enjoyed hunting, fishing, washing his cars, and taking long walks. He loved trips to the beach with his family and spending time with his four beautiful granddaughters. He was a kind, generous, Godly man, and he will be deeply missed by all those who knew him.


Glen is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Judge D. Scott and Alicia Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Holli and John Leach; brother and sister-in-law Gene and Peggy Smith; brother, Rembert Smith; sister and brother-in-law JoAnn and Gene Bowen; granddaughters Molly Smith, Megan Smith, Jaiden Leach and Kinsey Leach; great-granddaughter Ellie Joyce Edmonds; and several nephews, nieces, and extended family.


The family will receive friends at the chapel of Brannon’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 11th between the hours of 9:30 and 11:30 AM. A graveside service and military rites to celebrate the life and service of Donald Glen Smith will follow at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
