Mr. George Clifford Mathews, 80 of Ellijay, GA died Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Wildwood Nursing Home following several months of declining health. He was born in Pickens County on December 17, 1934, son of the late George and Lilly Childers Mathews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Mathews of Jasper; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Leon Grizzle of Jasper, and Pauline and Raymond Crook of Ellijay; a brother-in-law, Lonnie Freeman of Sonoraville; and a great-granddaughter, Jocelyn Mathews.

He leaves behind his sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell and Casey Mathews of Calhoun, and Randall and Donna Mathews of Fairmount; his daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Wilson of Fairmount, Peggy and Rodger Pitts of Rydal, and Marilyn and Keith Gibson of Fairmount; brothers and sister-in-law, Lloyd Mathews and Herb Mathews, both of Jasper, and Steve and Peggy Mathews of Ellijay; and a sister, Marcelle Freeman of Sonoraville. Grandchildren surviving are Chanel and Nick Hancock, Ray Mathews, Jonathon and Jessica Mathews, Elizabeth and Nathan Gay, Tiffany and Heath Lee, Dustin and April Scoggins, Jennifer and Kyle Hendley, Bryon and Jessica Mathews, Holly Robinson, Brittany and Jamie Miller, and Hannah Bell. Twenty-three great-grandchildren and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. George Clifford Mathews will be held Friday, August 7th at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Delmar Ledford officiating. Music will be arranged by Brittany Miller, Hannah Bell, and Jamie Balliew. Interment will follow in Crane Eater Cemetery. Active pallbearers will include Lamar Mathews, Gary Mathews, Travis Mathews, and Jamie Miller. Honorary pallbearers are Ray Mathews, Nathan Gay, and Nick Hancock.

The Mathews family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday after 5:00 PM.
