Mr. Charles Ronald “Ron” Free, 81, of Calhoun, passed away at his residence on Monday, April 3, 2023, following 9 months declining health.


He was born in Rome, Ga., the son of the late Rev. Alvin and Marble Free. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Clint Free and his nephew, Sean Free. He was a member of the 1960 graduating class of Calhoun High School where he enjoyed playing football and baseball. Prior to retirement, he was a fiber optics technician with Bellsouth. He was honored to serve two terms as a Gordon County commissioner. He also served two terms on the Gordon zoning commission. Ron was a member of Belmont Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Sportsman’s Sunday School Class, the adult choir, and ensembles. He was a member of Club Y and the Red Carpet Cattlemen’s Association. In addition to raising cattle, gardening, and creating things with his hands, his great joy was spending time with his family.


Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Brenda Fox Free; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Gregg and Victoria Free; grandchildren, Taylor (Heather) Free and Jacob (Melissa) Free; great-grandchildren, Harper Free and Henry Free; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Clifford and Mary Free, along with other relatives.


A service to celebrate the life of Charles Ronald “Ron” Free will be held on Tuesday, April 11th at 3:00 PM from Belmont Baptist Church with Rev(s) Clifford Free and Jim Sellers officiating. Honorary pallbearers include the Sportsman’s Sunday School Class, members of Club Y and Bellsouth employees. A private family graveside service was held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Gordon Memorial Gardens.


The family will receive friends at Belmont Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 11th from 1:00 PM until the service hour of 3:00 PM.
