Obituary

Buford "Burl" Wilson, 79, of Calhoun, died Sunday, June 23, 2019 at his home, following a year of declining health. He was born in Ranger, GA on January 9, 1940, son of the late Andrew Jackson Wilson and the late Pearl Hensley Wilson.
Burl was a veteran, serving his country in the United States Air Force. He worked at Lockheed, and founded and established many local businesses, including Calhoun Car Clinic, Calhoun International Harvester Tractors, Dream World Carpet, Calhoun Sports Center, Gold Key Properties, and Airport Rentals. He was a member of the Red Carpet Cattleman Association, the GA Cattleman Association, and a former member of the board of directors of Gordon Hospital, being instrumental in securing the location and building of the current facility. He was a private pilot in his spare time. Burl was a member of New Town Baptist Church, and a Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a supporter of Baptist International Missions Inc., with whom he was instrumental in building churches, schools, drilling wells for clean water, and erecting radio broadcasting towers to share the Gospel message in Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama.
He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Gayle Ray Wilson; his daughter, Sharon Wilson; his grandchildren, Tyler Roebuck, Aaron Jordan Sutherland (Amilee), and Adrianne Roebuck; his great-grandchildren, Eli and Benjamin Sutherland; and his sisters, Mellanese Correll, Betty Walraven, Billie Walraven, and Polly Scott and her husband Bradley. A host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive.
Services to honor the life of Burl Wilson will be held Thursday, June 27th at 1:00 PM from New Town Baptist Church, with Rev. Walter Hare and Rev. Jerry Boston officiating. Entombment will follow in a private mausoleum at Chandler Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 26th from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to New Town Baptist Church, 897 New Town Church Rd NE, Calhoun, GA 30701.
