Vernon Pulliam

Rev. Vernon Pulliam, age 77 of Calhoun, died Sunday, July 27, 2014. He was born in Chatsworth, GA on January 13, 1937, son of the late V.D. and Jane Dean Pulliam of Curryville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Pulliam; a sister, Ellen Hensley; and brothers-in-law, J.B. Gentry, Sonny Buchannan, and Fred Brock.

Rev. Pulliam pastored churches for 40 years in Gordon and surrounding counties before becoming disabled, including Curryville Baptist, Wayside Baptist, North Summerville Baptist, Mt. Zion Baptist, Hall Memorial Baptist, Corinth Baptist, Resaca First Baptist (Interim), New Zion Baptist, and Swamp Creek Baptist. He received an award from New Town Baptist Church for 55 years in gospel ministry. He was retired from Mannington Carpet after many years of service.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Shelby Spiva Pulliam; his daughters, Lisa Jones and Tresa West; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Julia Pulliam, all of Calhoun; sisters, Geneva Gentry, Mildred Brock, Brenda Godfrey and her husband Jimmy of Calhoun, and Ann Bowman and her husband James of Ringgold; brothers, Melvin Pulliam and his wife Barbara, and Gene Pulliam and his wife Estaline, all of Calhoun; five grandchildren, Jamon Jones of Kennesaw, Andrew Jones of Acworth, Ashley Blackstock Silvey and her husband Brett of Calhoun, Jada West of Calhoun, and Grace Pulliam of Calhoun; a great-grandchild, Briana Marleigh Silvey of Calhoun; a sister-in-law, Janice Pulliam; and a brother-in-law, Oliver Hensley. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Services to celebrate the life of Rev. Vernon Pulliam will be held Wednesday, July 30th at 11:00 AM from New Town Baptist Church, with Rev. Walter Hare and Rev. David Ray officiating. Music will be arranged by the New Town Baptist Mens Trio and Janice Ridley. Interment will follow in Chandler Cemetery with Rev. James Cobb conducting the committal service. Active pallbearers will include Jamie Minor, Terrill Anderson, Wayne McIntosh, Nevin Pulliam, Steve Pulliam, Tony Buchannan, Jamon Jones, and Andrew Jones. Honorary pallbearers are The Joy Group and C.J. Freeman.

The Pulliam family will receive friends at New Town Baptist Church Tuesday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
