Gene Butterworth

Mr. Eugene Calvin "Gene" Butterworth, age 85 of Calhoun, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Gordon Hospital following complications of Alzheimers for the past three years. He was born on September 4, 1928, son of the late Henry Herbert and Martha Coveney Butterworth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Virginia Goss Butterworth in 1978; his second wife, Louise "Lucy" Plemmons Butterworth in 2011; a brother, Brooks Butterworth of Douglasville; a brother-in-law, Eulan Bruce of Canton; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ray and Jewel Jones of Rocky Face.

Gene was a veteran, serving his country in Korea with the US Marines. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a B.A. degree in Poultry Science. During his lifetime he was employed with Swift and Company, Strain Poultry, and Cagles Farms, Inc., retiring as General Manager in 1994 after 30 years of service. He loved Salem Baptist Church, where he was a member, and served as a Deacon and Brotherhood Director. He also loved reading his Daily Devotion.

Gene leaves behind his three children, Teresa Butterworth, Terry Butterworth and his wife Lisa, and Greg Butterworth, all of Calhoun; grandchildren, Kyle and Connor Butterworth; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Butterworth of Douglasville, and Rachel Bruce of Canton; and nieces and nephews, Lorraine and Dale Brookshire, Raymond Jones, Raymond Redd, Sandra and Sonny Padgett, Steve Bruce, Chris and Courtney Redd, and Hannah Redd; and a first cousin, Douglas and Gloria Cagle of Atlanta. Other great nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.

Services to celebrate the life of Mr. Gene Butterworth will be held Wednesday, July 9th at 2:00 PM from Salem Baptist Church, with Dr. William Roberts officiating. Genes body will lie in state at the church from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour. Music will be arranged by the church choir. Interment will follow in Haven of Rest Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will include Alan Jackson, Mike Evelti, Chris Hales, Mike Hales, Kyle Butterworth, and Connor Butterworth. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Clark, Lamar Nance, and David Green, and members of the Salem Baptist Church Senior Adult Sunday School Class.

The Butterworth family will receive friends at Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home Tuesday, July 8th from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Genes name to the Salem Baptist Church Building Fund.
